The European Sepsis Alliance is run by a 12-member steering committee elected directly by our members. The ESA is supported by the World Sepsis Day Head Office.

CHAIR
Evangelos Giamarellos-Bourboulis, Greece
Evangelos is chair of the ESA. He is specialized in Internal Medicine and in Infectious Diseases. His main research contribution is immunomodulation in sepsis for which he was awarded the Young Investigator Research Award by the European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases. Currently, he is Professor of Internal Medicine at the Medical School of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. He has 476 publications in international peer-reviewed journals and h-index 80. He is chairing the Hellenic Sepsis Study Group.
Research Working group Coordinator
Adam Linder, Sweden
Adam is Coordinator of the ESA Research Working Group. He is a professor for Infection Medicine and a specialist in Infectious Diseases with a position as a senior consultant and senior lecturer at the Clinic for Infectious Diseases at Lund University Hospital, Sweden. His research interest lies in epidemiology, early diagnostics, novel treatment options and long-term outcomes of sepsis. Adam is one of the initiators of Combatsepsis, a Swedish network for translational sepsis research and he is the founder of Sepsisfonden.
Patient and Family Support Working Group Coordinator
Marianne Haverkamp, Spain
Marianne serves as Co-Chair of the European Sepsis Alliance Patients & Family Workgroup and of the GSA Global Sepsis Survivors & Families Committee. A survivor of septic shock with multi-organ failure, she founded SepsisInfo.es to raise awareness, support survivors, and advocate for better post-sepsis care. She regularly speaks at conferences on post-sepsis syndrome, long-term cognitive, psychological, and physical sequelae, and the need for national sepsis plans and structured rehabilitation.

Ulrika Knutsson, Sweden
Ulrika is a communications specialist. In 2015, she and Dr Adam Linder founded Sepsisfonden in Sweden (the Swedish Sepsis Trust) a trust that has grown to be a mayor influencer in Sweden when it comes to spreading sepsis awareness to the public, as well as to decision makers, and raising money for research. In her capacity as communications director at Sepsisfonden, she has also worked closely with the Swedish National Sepsis Plan committee. For example, Sepsisfonden has been involved in providing the program with patient relevant material. Sepsisfonden received Global Sepsis Alliances Award 2020, much due to Ulrika’s efforts in the sepsis awareness work in Sweden.

Djillali Annane, France
Djillali is Dean of Medical School at University Paris Saclay and Head of ICU at Raymond Poincaré Hospital in Garches, is President-elect of French national council of medical schools Deans. He was Senior Counselor for the French Minister of Health, and was President of the French Society of Intensive Care Medicine. He has contributed to the medical literature with > 460 peer –reviewed articles (H-index 86; Google scholar), about 150 book chapters, and has given > 400 conferences.
Antonio Artigas, Spain
Antonio is Professor of Applied Physiology and Chair of Sepsis and Acute Respiratory Failure Research at the Autonomous University of Barcelona. He is director of the Intensive Care Medicine Department at Corporacion Sanitaria Universitaria Parc Tauli and Sagrado Corazon-General de Cataluña Hospitals and member of the advisory committee for sepsis to the Catalan Government. Antonio is a honorary member of the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine and received the Educational Award of the European Respiratory Society.
Michael Bauer
Ron Daniels, United Kingdom
Ron is an NHS Consultant in Intensive Care, based in Birmingham, UK. He’s Chief Executive of the UK Sepsis Trust and serves on the Executive Committee of the Global Sepsis Alliance. Ron has operationally transformed the delivery of reliable sepsis care in the UK and beyond, through his creation of the Red Flag Sepsis recognition tool and the Sepsis 6 treatment pathway. In 2016, he was awarded the British Empire Medal for services to patients.
Fabio Guarracino
Fabio is Director of the Department of Cardiothoracic Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care, University Hospital of Pisa, Italy. From 2018 until 2021, he was President of the European Association of Cardiothoracic Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care (EACTAIC). He is now serving as the Chair for Intensive Care of the Forum 3 Organs of the European Society of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine (ESAIC), and Chair-elect of the Scientific Committee of ESAIC. His research interests are pathophysiology of shock states with particular focus on septic shock, critical care hemodynamics, perioperative echocardiography, extracorporeal cardiorespiratory mechanical support.
DENNIS KREDLER, BELGIUM
Dennis survived severe sepsis in 2016, suffering amputation of parts of his foot. He is now an advocate for better preventive sepsis policies throughout the European Union. In his professional life, he is Head of the Brussels Office of Dow. He holds Economics degrees from the College of Europe, Bruges (Belgium), the University of Sussex (UK), and the University of Grenoble (France).
Manu Malbrain, Belgium
Manu served as ICU and Medical Director in several Belgian hospitals before moving into medical data management as Chief Medical Officer at Medaman, an EHDEN-certified SME. He is also Professor of Critical Care Research at the Medical University of Lublin (Poland) and completed a master’s in insurance medicine and medical expertise in 2025. He co-founded and presides over the International Fluid Academy, and is co-founder, past president, and current treasurer of the Abdominal Compartment Society (WSACS). He has given more than 1,000 lectures internationally and authored or co-authored over 400 peer-reviewed publications. He authored a landmark book on Abdominal Compartment Syndrome and a bestselling guide on rational IV fluid therapy (over 1.67 million accesses). His h-index is 64 (Scopus) and 86 (Google Scholar), with 37,674 citations.

Marvin Zick, Germany
Marvin is General Manager of the Global Sepsis Alliance and has a background in Business Administration. He is responsible for all communications, websites, World Sepsis Day, World Sepsis Congress, and more.
SIMONE MANCINI, ITALY
Simone has joined the Global Sepsis Alliance as Coordinator Regional Sepsis Alliances in October 2019. He has an extensive background in public affairs, external communications, and association management which he will put to good use to coordinate the work of the Regional Sepsis Alliances and the implementation of national sepsis strategies.
KATJA COUBALL, GERMANY
Katja is graphic designer and social media manager at the Global Sepsis Alliance. She is responsible for nearly all visuals you see - from the ESA logo to the World Sepsis Day Infographics.
