EuroPEan Sepsis Care Survey

The objective of the European Sepsis Care Survey (ESCS) is to explore the current state of sepsis care in hospitals around Europe. The study aims at general hospital structures, sepsis care in emergency departments, wards and intensive care units and also clinical diagnostic and microbiological service.

The ESCS used a questionnaire, including 94 questions, and was created and harmonized by a multidisciplinary steering committee.

The survey addresses the following parts:

  1. General structures of the hospital.

  2. Sepsis care at the emergency department

  3. Sepsis care at the wards

  4. Sepsis care at the intensive care unit

  5. Quality management / hospital improvement programs for sepsis

No patient’s data are collected. National coordinators from 27 countries coordinated and supported the recruitment of participants.

The survey was run by the University of Greifswald on behalf of the ESA, under the leadership Dr. Christian Scheer.
